Good article, Ralph. Makes a lot of sense. Being a SoCal photographer, I tend to use the afternoon golden hour more, but the points you make are well taken when traveling, especially.

Cristina, sorry for the late response, but because I've been with a people-to-people program in Cuba I wasn't able to get back to you in time.

I've had very good luck with photographing the locals. It's all about the approach, but I also tend to shoot from a fair distance, at least at the beginning, so that I can go for the more candid shots first. Then if I feel it's appropriate and the scene warrants, I'll get in close and see if I can get some more posed portraits.

Thanks Ralph! I looked at your app (My Shots Lists for Travel) and that's a cool app! I also checked out the screenshots in iTunes for VelaClock and I think GoldenPic looks easier to read and follow. GoldenPic also has the moon phase, moonrise & moonset times, weather and also lets you save your favorite locations (GPS coordinates).

In reference to #2 (in your article), do you find the locals are pretty cooperative with you talking to them and photographing them, or do they look at you as "one of those tourists" invading their community?

Great photos and a really great article! I never really thought about the traffic, but that's so true! I'm also a huge fan of golden hour photography and just downloaded an app for my iPhone called GoldenPic that provides me with the times for Golden Hour, Blue Hour, sunrise and sunset. Now I just need to get out there and start snapping away!

You can find more info on GoldenPic at http://goldenpic.jebsapps.com/gplink.php
